Leather Storage Boxes for Yachts: Which One for Which Space

A navy leather box with a woven texture, a light walnut frame and a small leather loop on its lid sits on a pale timber console in a bright salon, with a white grand piano and the sea behind.

In brief

  • Leather storage boxes give the small things on a console or dresser one lidded home.
  • Veyra Deck's six boxes form two families: walnut-framed (7 cm deep) and mahogany-lid (5.5 cm deep).
  • A box on a surface is still a loose object; before a passage, it goes into a locker.
  • Care is a cloth: slightly damp on leather, dry on timber. Museum guidance from the Canadian Conservation Institute no longer generally recommends leather dressings.
  • Start with the Walnut-Framed Leather Storage Box, Large: 32 x 23 x 7 cm, from $300.

On a sailing yacht, the saloon "tends to be a magnet for bits and pieces", Yachting Monthly observes. The chart table, it adds, is "an inviting place to put coffee mugs, sunglasses, cast-off clothing and other loose items".

That article describes a sailing yacht, but the same can be said of a console or a dresser. A leather storage box is a lidded, leather-covered box sized to a surface: a console, a dresser, a side table or a shelf. It gives small things one home. The room-by-room guide to luxury yacht accessories covers the wider interior.

What storage has to do on a yacht

Storage on a yacht has four jobs. It gives each small thing one home, closes over it with a lid, fits the surface it stands on, and stows away before a passage. A leather storage box left on a console is itself a loose object.

Yachting Monthly's pre-departure advice for sailing yachts is to "allocate a specific stowage for everything". It also warns: "Anything on the table will almost certainly jump off at some time, so needs putting away."

On a table, the rail that stops things sliding off has a nautical name: the fiddle. The American Heritage Dictionary defines it: "A guardrail used on a table during rough weather to prevent things from slipping off." A lidded box is not a fiddle: it gathers small things but does not hold them, or itself, in place.

Before an ocean crossing, Dockwalk's chief stew guide says superyacht ornaments and furniture "need to be safely secured, with plenty of padding and strong but gentle strapping". Before a passage, a leather storage box with a lid goes into a locker, or is secured like any ornament.

Walnut frame or mahogany lid: two box families compared

Veyra Deck's six leather storage boxes fall into two families. In the walnut-framed boxes, the timber gives the box its edges and structure; each is 7 cm deep. In the mahogany-lid boxes, the body is leather-covered and the timber is the lid; each is 5.5 cm deep.

All six are covered in leather with a woven-embossed texture: the weave is pressed into the leather, not built from strips. All six come in eight colourways.

Mahogany is a traditional timber of yacht building. Practical Boat Owner describes the common picture of "finer yachts dripping in teak and mahogany". At one yard, Boat International reported in 2015, "Mahogany is the feature wood and is used on all the furniture and panelling". The USDA Forest Service's Wood Handbook (PDF) lists "fine furniture and cabinets, interior woodwork, pattern woodwork, boat construction" among mahogany's principal uses. None of these sources describes the mahogany lids on Veyra Deck's boxes.

Walnut is a furniture and cabinet timber. The American Hardwood Information Center, a US trade body, lists "Furniture, cabinets, architectural millwork" first among walnut's main uses. Choose by where the timber should show: at the edges on a walnut box, or across the whole top on a mahogany box.

Which leather storage box for which space

The right leather storage box depends on the surface. A salon console takes the largest footprints, and a round side table takes a square box. A cabin dresser takes the medium or small sizes, or the largest where there is room. A shelf or joinery recess takes the low, 5.5 cm Leather Box with Mahogany Lid, Large.

On a salon console, start with the Walnut-Framed Leather Storage Box, Large. It is 32 x 23 x 7 cm, from $300. Its 7 cm depth takes watches, tea or coffee capsules, or the contents of a desk drawer. The same box suits a dining sideboard.

A round side table or a square console takes a square, where a rectangle sits awkwardly. The Square Walnut-Framed Leather Storage Box is 26 x 26 x 7 cm, from $300. As a decorative leather storage box, the Square Leather Box with Mahogany Lid shows its full lid from above. It is 27 x 27 x 5.5 cm, from $350.

A square tan leather box with a woven texture and a dark timber lid with a small metal knob sits on a timber desk under a brass porthole, beside a pen and an envelope.

Where the largest box would dominate a cabin dresser, step down a size. The Walnut-Framed Leather Storage Box, Medium is 27 x 19 x 7 cm, from $290, and takes jewellery, watches and cufflinks.

The Leather Box with Mahogany Lid, Small is 27.5 x 20 x 5.5 cm, from $310. Its shallow depth suits flat contents: jewellery, keys, cufflinks, papers. The yacht guest cabin checklist covers stowing a cabin for sea.

Under a shelf or in a joinery recess, height decides. The Leather Box with Mahogany Lid, Large is 34 x 25 x 5.5 cm, from $350. Its low profile is about fit, not about holding fast under way. The grain of the lid is what is seen from above, and each lid differs slightly.

Baskets and hampers: open or lidded

Two bulky things in a head or cabin need a place of their own: clean towels and laundry. Veyra Deck's towel basket is open, so towels are seen and reached. Veyra Deck's laundry hamper is lidded, so its contents stay out of sight.

Burgess, a yacht brokerage, calls the towel the item "required more than anything else onboard". Boat International's 2015 guide to superyacht linen advised "at least three sizes of towel (shower, hair and hand)" and "up to five sets per cabin".

The Hand-Woven Leather Towel Basket, 36 cm is 36 x 36 x 24 cm, from $600, in eight colourways. It is the only hand-woven piece here: built from woven leather strips, its structure and surface are the same material. It holds a stack of rolled towels or folded linens.

A lidded hamper in pale canvas with navy leather trim stands on a woven rug in a white cabin, with a striped robe hanging beside it.

On large crewed yachts, Boat International's guest rulebook says, "Laundry is usually discreetly taken out of your cabin and returned the same day." It names no hamper or laundry basket. Where laundry waits before collection is the owner's choice.

The Lidded Canvas and Leather Laundry Hamper, 45 x 30 cm is 45 x 30 x 50 cm, from $870, in seven colourways. It is a canvas hamper with leather detailing rather than a leather laundry hamper throughout. Canvas keeps it light enough to lift and reposition, and the rectangular footprint sits flat against a bulkhead.

The coffee corner

The coffee corner in a galley or salon needs a home for capsules. Veyra Deck's Leather Coffee Capsule Box, Large is leather-covered, with drawers that keep coffee capsules ordered and out of sight. Stainless steel details mark the corners and pulls. It comes in three colourways, Grey, Blue and Tan, from $570.

A tan leather box with steel handles has one drawer open showing coffee capsules, on a marble counter beside an espresso cup, with an espresso machine and the sea behind.

The product page states no dimensions, so ask before ordering: info@veyradeck.com. The Square Walnut-Framed Leather Storage Box, from $300, is a simpler home for capsules.

The towel basket, the laundry hamper and the capsule box compare as follows.

Piece Size Price Colourways Access
Hand-Woven Leather Towel Basket, 36 cm 36 x 36 x 24 cm from $600 8 Open
Lidded Canvas and Leather Laundry Hamper, 45 x 30 cm 45 x 30 x 50 cm from $870 7 Lidded
Leather Coffee Capsule Box, Large not stated on the product page from $570 3 Drawers

Timber and leather in humidity and light

On a leather storage box, timber and leather both respond to humidity and light, and the care that follows is simple. The conservation sources cited here deal with humidity and light, not salt. Their guidance was written for homes and museum collections, not for boats. It favours a stable environment and shade over oils and dressings.

When humidity rises, the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) explains, "wood absorbs water and swells a little". Its advice is "to maintain a stable environment", and it adds that no amount of oil will keep wood from drying out in low humidity.

For museum leather, CCI Notes 8/2 says mould "requires a relative humidity in excess of 65% to grow". It recommends a stable relative humidity of 45% to 55%. Direct sunlight or daylight, it warns, "can cause discolouration, desiccation, and photo-chemical degradation". Leather dressings, it adds, are "now not generally recommended". These are museum figures, not cabin targets.

So the boxes need a cloth, not a conditioner, oil or polish. Follow the care and maintenance page. Wipe leather with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it immediately. Dust timber frames and lids with a dry cloth. For salt, spills and condensation, read leather care on a yacht.

How to choose: a checklist

Most yacht storage ideas start with a tape measure, and choosing a leather storage box is no different. Eight checks follow, taken in order: the surface, the clearance, the contents, the lid, the shape, the timber, the colour and the stowage. Work through them before ordering.

  1. Measure the surface against the footprints above.
  2. Measure the clearance: 7 cm or 5.5 cm, plus room for the lid.
  3. List the contents: flat things suit 5.5 cm, mixed things 7 cm.
  4. Choose a lid or an open piece; see the leather tray buying guide for trays.
  5. Choose square for a round side table, rectangular for a dresser.
  6. Match the timber to the joinery: walnut frame or mahogany lid.
  7. Keep one colour across rooms.
  8. Name the locker the box goes into before a passage.

Then choose from the leather boxes.

Common questions

Veyra Deck's six leather storage boxes come in two timber families, 7 cm or 5.5 cm deep, and in eight colourways. Care takes a cloth. The five answers below cover timber, dividers, colour, care and delivery, drawn from the product pages, the store policies and the sources cited above.

How do the walnut and mahogany boxes differ?

Veyra Deck's walnut-framed and mahogany-lid boxes differ in where the timber sits. A walnut-framed box has walnut at its edges and leather as its surface, and is 7 cm deep. A mahogany-lid box has a leather-covered body and a mahogany lid, and is 5.5 cm deep.

Do the boxes have dividers?

No dividers are described for Veyra Deck's largest walnut-framed box. Its product page says the 7 cm depth takes jewellery, watches, tea or coffee capsules, or the contents of a desk drawer "without needing internal divisions". To check any other box before ordering, write to info@veyradeck.com.

Can the boxes match across rooms?

Yes, across seven of the nine pieces. Veyra Deck's six leather storage boxes and the towel basket share eight colourways: Black, Brown, Navy Blue, Beige, Grey, Tan, Mink and Khaki. The laundry hamper comes in seven, with no Brown. The coffee capsule box comes in Grey, Blue and Tan.

How are the boxes cared for on board?

Care for a leather storage box on board takes a cloth. Wipe the leather with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it immediately; dust the timber with a dry cloth. Museum guidance from the Canadian Conservation Institute no longer generally recommends leather dressings, so no conditioner is needed.

How long is delivery, and are returns accepted?

Orders are dispatched within 3-7 business days and typically arrive 6-10 business days after dispatch, about 2-4 weeks in all. Shipping is free worldwide and duties are paid. Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery with a prepaid return label; bespoke pieces are excluded.
