Yacht Bar Accessories: Ice Buckets, Coolers and Barware

A navy woven-embossed leather champagne bucket with a bottle on ice and two crystal flutes on a teak cockpit table at golden hour, the sea behind.

In brief

  • Yacht bar accessories have two extra jobs on board: keep finished teak dry and slow the melt in warm air.
  • Five of the six Veyra Deck pieces are double-walled stainless steel in woven-embossed leather; the thermos is a leather-wrapped steel vessel.
  • A champagne bucket chills a bottle in ice and water. The wine cooler holds a chilled bottle without ice.
  • The steel is 304-grade (18/8), an interior grade: rinse off salt with fresh water, then dry.
  • Start with the Small ice bucket, the wine cooler and the coaster set on its stand. See the Bar & Ice collection.

The anchor is down and the first round is on the cockpit table. An ordinary ice bucket sits beside it, beading with water. By the second round the ice is mostly water, and a pale ring marks the varnished teak.

Neither fault belongs to the ice. Both belong to a single cold wall in warm, damp air.

Yacht bar accessories are the pieces that carry drinks service away from the galley: ice buckets, a champagne bucket, a wine cooler and a thermos. Among luxury boat accessories, this is the group that spends its evenings on deck.

What makes yacht bar accessories work on board

Yacht bar accessories work on board when they solve five problems: condensation on finished surfaces, melt rate, stowage, salt air and stability. A double-walled stainless steel body with an insulating cavity addresses the first two. Published dimensions, a lid, a tray beneath and a rinse-and-dry routine address the rest.

The ring on the teak is a dew-point problem. The US National Weather Service defines dew point as "the temperature to which air must be cooled in order to reach saturation". Moisture condenses on a cold bottle, it adds, when the air's dew point is above the bottle's temperature.

The University of Sydney's School of Physics explains the fix with an evacuated double-walled flask: conduction can only occur where the two walls meet. The Bar & Ice bodies are not evacuated; an insulating cavity separates the two walls instead. The outer wall stays nearer air temperature, which keeps condensation off the leather in normal conditions and slows the melt.

As open-air living reshapes deck design, yacht barware spends more of its life in salt air. Robb Report quotes Mark Gardner of RWD on the shift: "Outdoor living is indoor living."

Ice buckets: three sizes, three jobs

A navy woven-embossed leather ice bucket with its lid closed on a stone bar counter in a yacht salon at dusk, two tumblers and a decanter beside it.

The Veyra Deck yacht ice bucket comes in three sizes, each with a different job. The 9.5 cm Mini serves two, the 14 x 14 x 13 cm Small a cockpit table, and the 17 cm Large a full table. Every one has a lid.

Each leather ice bucket, like the champagne bucket and the wine cooler, is double-walled stainless steel wrapped in woven-embossed leather: the weave is pressed in, not built from strips. Every piece is made by hand in Türkiye.

The Mini is 9.5 x 9.5 x 9.5 cm, with a polished steel lid and side handles, in eight colourways. It suits a cabin nightstand or a gift; see the guide to yacht owner gifts for the Fort Lauderdale boat show.

The Leather-Wrapped Stainless Steel Ice Bucket, Small is 14 x 14 x 13 cm, from $330, in seven colourways (no Brown). The Leather-Wrapped Stainless Steel Ice Bucket, Large is 17 x 17 x 17 cm, from $400 in eight colourways. Both lids have a polished steel knob.

The double wall slows the melt, but how long ice lasts depends on the heat of the day and how often the lid comes off.

Champagne bucket vs wine cooler: ice or no ice

A champagne bucket chills a bottle; a wine cooler keeps a chilled bottle cold. A champagne bucket for boat service needs ice and water packed round the bottle. The Veyra Deck double-walled wine cooler holds one bottle at temperature without ice or meltwater.

The Comité Champagne recommends serving Champagne at 8 to 10 °C (46 to 50 °F). Its method is an ice bucket half filled with water and ice, 20 to 30 minutes before serving. WSET advises filling the bucket three-quarters full with equal quantities of ice and water, so the bottle is fully surrounded.

The Leather-Wrapped Stainless Steel Champagne Bucket is 19.5 x 19.5 x 19.5 cm, with a polished steel rim and side handles, from $490 in eight colourways. It takes a bottle with ice packed around it.

Once a bottle is at temperature, more ice is not better. WSET warns that over-chilling below 6 °C (43 °F) can mask flavours in white, rosé and sparkling wines. Holding a chilled bottle without more ice is the job of the Leather-Wrapped Stainless Steel Wine Cooler, Single Bottle: 12 x 12 x 20 cm, from $200, in eight colourways (including Turquoise, no Brown). It holds one bottle of wine or sparkling wine at temperature without ice, with no meltwater and a dry outer surface.

The thermos: hot and cold without a trip to the galley

The Veyra Deck thermos is a 1.5 litre stainless steel vessel with leather applied by hand, a chrome pour lid and a handle. At 12.5 x 12.5 x 24 cm, it carries hot or cold drinks to the deck and saves trips to the galley.

The Leather-Wrapped Stainless Steel Thermos, 1.5 litre is from $330 in seven colourways (no Brown). Coffee on the flybridge and cold water at the helm share one problem: the galley is a deck away.

Completing the bar: coasters, a tray and a napkin holder

Three Veyra Deck pieces complete a yacht bar: six coasters on a stand, a 36 x 36 cm serving tray and a napkin holder. Each one answers the same question: what happens to small, light things when the boat moves.

Coasters slide when the boat moves. The Woven Leather Coaster Set with Stainless Steel Stand is six 10 x 10 cm woven-embossed leather coasters, from $180 in eight colourways. The stand is the reason to choose it aboard. The serving tray carries a bar set-up in one trip, and the napkin holder's handle weights the napkins on a moving table. The leather tray buying guide covers sizes by room.

Stainless steel and leather in salt air: honest care

The stainless steel in Veyra Deck barware is 304-grade, also known as 18/8. 304 is the standard food-contact and interior grade; the producer Outokumpu places it in interior and light urban environments. It is not a grade for seawater service. Salt left to dry can cause tea staining or pitting, which is why a fresh-water rinse and a dry cloth after use on deck matter.

The British Stainless Steel Association (BSSA) describes 18/8 as containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Corrosion resistance comes from a passive, chromium-rich oxide film, and BSSA notes that localised corrosion is often associated with chloride ions in water. BSSA also states that 304 "should not be considered suitable for seawater service".

So these are interior and table pieces that visit the deck, not deck hardware. BSSA's care sheet sets the routine: mild detergent in warm water, "then rinse in clean water and dry". ASSDA defines tea staining as "discolouration of the surface of stainless steel by corrosion" and notes that washing removes deposits such as salt.

Leather Naturally advises letting wet leather dry naturally, not by hairdryer, radiator or direct sunlight. Our own guidance: wipe the leather dry, leave no standing water, and wash every piece by hand, never in a dishwasher. Why hand-finished leather suits current interiors is covered in the season's shift from gloss to touch.

How to choose: a five-point checklist

Choosing yacht bar accessories comes down to five decisions, taken in order. They are the way the bottle is served, the number of guests, the stowage, the leather tone and the care routine. Settle them before ordering and the pieces will suit the boat and each other.

  1. Decide ice or no ice. The champagne bucket chills a bottle; the wine cooler holds a chilled one without meltwater.
  2. Size the ice to the table. Mini for two, Small for a cockpit table, Large when guests are aboard.
  3. Measure the locker first. The widest piece is the 19.5 cm champagne bucket; the tallest is the 24 cm thermos.
  4. Pick one tone for the whole bar. Check it on every piece; Brown is missing from three.
  5. Plan the rinse. 304-grade steel wants fresh water and a dry cloth after every day on deck.

Plan the other spaces with the room-by-room guide to yacht accessories.

Common questions

Buyers of yacht bar accessories usually ask about five things before ordering. They are condensation on teak, the steel grade, ice in a wine cooler, cleaning after a day on deck, and colour matching. Delivery and duties are covered in the section above.

Does a double-walled ice bucket sweat or leave rings on teak?

A double-walled ice bucket sweats far less than a single-walled one. The insulating cavity keeps the outer wall nearer air temperature, so condensation stays off the leather in normal conditions. In very humid air, a tray under the bucket remains sensible on varnished teak.

Is the stainless steel made for salt water?

No. Veyra Deck barware uses 304-grade (18/8) stainless steel, the standard food-contact and interior grade. The British Stainless Steel Association states that 304 should not be considered suitable for seawater service. After use on deck, rinse each piece with fresh water and dry it with a cloth.

Does a wine cooler need ice?

The Veyra Deck wine cooler does not need ice. Its double-walled stainless steel body holds one chilled bottle of wine or sparkling wine at temperature, with no meltwater. To chill a warm bottle of Champagne to the Comité Champagne's 8 to 10 °C, use the champagne bucket with ice and water.

How should leather and steel barware be cleaned after a day on deck?

Rinse the stainless steel of each bar piece with fresh water, wash by hand with mild detergent if needed, and dry it. Wipe the leather with a damp cloth and let it dry naturally, away from direct sun. No Veyra Deck bar piece is dishwasher-safe.

Can the bar pieces match the rest of the interior?

Yes. Veyra Deck leather comes in eight tones: Khaki, Black, Navy Blue, Grey, Mink, Beige, Tan and Brown, with Turquoise on selected pieces. Colourway counts differ by piece: Brown is not offered on the Small ice bucket, the wine cooler or the thermos.

Where to start

Start a Veyra Deck yacht bar with three pieces. The Small ice bucket, 14 x 14 x 13 cm, handles the cockpit table. The single-bottle wine cooler holds a chilled bottle at temperature, with no meltwater. The coaster set with its stand protects the teak. See the full Bar & Ice collection.

Pieces are held in stock and ship within 1-2 business days. Delivery typically takes 4-15 business days, shipping is free worldwide, and orders ship Delivered Duty Paid (DDP), so nothing is charged on delivery.
