Which Leather Tray for Which Space on Board: A Buying Guide

In brief
- Buy by room, not by catalogue. A tray that carries and a tray that sits still are different objects.
- Serving trays with stainless steel handles run 31 x 21 cm to 50 x 37 cm. Valet trays run 15 x 15 cm to 32 x 17.5 cm.
- Seven of the eight leather tones run across every tray: Khaki, Black, Navy Blue, Grey, Mink, Beige and Tan. Choose one of these if you want the boat to match.
- Everything is made by hand in Türkiye, held in stock and typically delivered within 4–15 business days.
- Start with the medium serving tray and one valet tray per cabin. See the tray collection.
The passage from the galley to the aft deck is short. Under way it is the longest part of the service. A crew member carries four cups, a pot and a small jug across a threshold and up two steps into wind. The boat rolls once on the way.
What matters at that moment is not the finish of the tray. It is whether the handles sit where a hand naturally goes. It is whether the rim gives a cup something to fetch up against.
Most tray buying starts from a picture rather than from that passage. Below, the range is set out by the space it serves. Most trays here have a woven-embossed surface: the weave texture is pressed into the leather rather than woven from strips. Handles and stands are polished stainless steel.
Salon and dining: the piece that holds a whole service

The salon tray is the one that comes out when there are people aboard. It has to take a full coffee or drinks service in a single trip, because a second trip means a second crossing of the same threshold.
The Large Woven Leather Serving Tray with Stainless Steel Handles is 50 x 37 cm, from $490, in eight colourways. That footprint takes a full service without the cups touching. It is also the tray that reads correctly on a large salon table when empty. A tray that only looks right when loaded gets stowed, and a stowed tray does not get used.
Depth is the quiet consideration. A 50 x 37 cm tray needs a locker or shelf that takes it flat. Measure the stowage before the table.
Galley to deck: the tray that stays in daily use
There is almost always one tray that never goes back in the locker. On most boats it is not the largest one.
The Medium Woven Leather Serving Tray with Stainless Steel Handles is 45 x 32 cm, from $460, in nine colourways, the widest palette in the range. It is the only tray offered in both Brown and Turquoise. It takes a coffee service for four. It is also narrow enough to carry one-handed through a companionway with the other hand on a rail. That is the actual test.
For cabin service, or a pair of glasses out to the flybridge, the range drops to 31 x 21 cm. Two cups and a small pot. That size fits a cabin shelf in a way the larger ones do not, and it is listed with the rest of the range below.
Glasses on a tray are stable. Glasses set down on a table are not, and coasters slide before the glass does. The Woven Leather Coaster Set with Stainless Steel Stand is a set of six, from $180, in eight colourways. The stand is the point, not the coasters.
Owner's and guest cabins: valet trays sized to a shelf
A valet tray is a smaller problem with a stricter answer. It has to fit a specific shelf, and it has to have sides deep enough that a watch does not walk off it overnight.
The Woven Leather Valet Tray, 18.5 cm is 18.5 x 18.5 cm with 6 cm sides, from $160, in eight colourways. Watch, wallet, keys. It is the default for an owner's cabin because it takes a full pocket clearance without becoming a dish.
Guest cabins want less. The Compact Woven Leather Valet Tray, 15 cm is 15 x 15 cm with 6 cm sides, from $130, in eight colourways. A watch, rings or cufflinks, and nothing more. On a narrow guest shelf the smaller footprint is the reason it works, not a compromise.
Measure the shelf depth first. Depth is what rules a valet tray in or out.
Coffee table and console: the tray that does not travel
Some trays are never carried. Their job is to give a surface an edge, so that what sits on it reads as placed rather than left.
The Square Woven Leather Tray, Handleless, 36 cm is 36 x 36 cm, from $300, in seven colourways. It shares its footprint with the handled square tray but reads as a surface rather than a carrier. On a coffee table it takes a book, a lighter and a pair of glasses and gives them a boundary. Without handles, the outline stays quiet on an open table.
Handles are not a free addition. On a static piece they add visual weight and a place for a sleeve to catch. Choose handles when the tray will be carried, and leave them off when it will not.

Choosing sizes as a set
Stewards tend to buy one colour and repeat it across the boat. The reason is practical rather than aesthetic. When every tray is the same tone, a piece from the salon can be used in a cabin without looking borrowed. A replacement ordered next season matches what is already aboard.
The house palette is eight leather tones, plus Turquoise on selected pieces. Seven of those eight run through every tray in the range: Khaki, Black, Navy Blue, Grey, Mink, Beige and Tan. Brown and Turquoise appear on some trays and not others, so a set built around either will have gaps. This is worth settling before the first order rather than after.
A workable set for a boat with three cabins runs like this. One large or medium serving tray for the salon. One small tray for cabin service. One valet tray per cabin, sized to the shelf. Add the handleless square if there is a coffee table that needs an edge.
For a refit, colour matching across a larger list is handled directly. Write to info@veyradeck.com with the room list and shelf dimensions.
Leather on a boat: salt air, handling, cleaning
A tray is handled more than most pieces on board: carried full, set down wet and wiped after service.
Why hand-finished pieces suit current interiors is covered in the shift from gloss to touch in Mediterranean interiors.
Salt is the thing to manage, and it is managed by habit rather than product. Wipe the leather with a soft dry cloth after service, and wipe the stainless steel handles down when they have been in spray or open air. Salt left to dry on any surface is what causes trouble later. Keep trays out of standing water and long spells of direct sun. Let anything damp dry naturally rather than with heat. Museum practice points the same way: the Canadian Conservation Institute now advises minimising dressings, lubricants and cleaners on leather because of their long-term effects, and rates unpainted leather as moderately sensitive to light. On the metal, the Australian Stainless Steel Development Association calls the brown film that salt air leaves on stainless steel “tea staining”: a cosmetic issue that does not affect the integrity of the metal, and one that a light, regular wash is the best way to prevent.

Delivery, bespoke sizes and returns
Every piece is finished by hand in Türkiye, one at a time. Stock pieces ship within 1–2 business days, delivery is typically within 4–15 business days, and worldwide shipping is free.
Bespoke sizes and finishes are available for yacht and contract projects. If a shelf, locker or table calls for a dimension that is not in the range, that is the normal route rather than an exception. Send the measurement to info@veyradeck.com.
Returns follow the Refund policy. Bespoke pieces are excluded, since they are cut to a single set of measurements.

Common questions
Will the stainless steel handles rust?
The handles, and the coaster stand, are polished stainless steel. Stainless resists corrosion but is not immune to it, and salt left to dry is what marks metal aboard. Wipe the handles with a dry cloth once they have been in spray or open air. The British Stainless Steel Association's care sheet lists salt deposits from marine conditions among the deposits that discolour stainless steel, and recommends washing with soap or mild detergent and warm water followed by a clean-water rinse.
Will a tray slide when the boat moves?
No tray is fixed to a surface, and these are not sold as non-slip. What they give you is a raised rim, so contents have something to fetch up against instead of travelling. Valet trays carry 5.5 cm to 6.5 cm sides for the same reason. Where the risk is real it is designed out: the coaster set has a stainless steel stand.
Can I match colours across different products?
Yes, within the seven tones that run through the whole range: Khaki, Black, Navy Blue, Grey, Mink, Beige and Tan. Brown and Turquoise are available on selected pieces only. If the set has to match exactly across rooms, choose from the seven.
My cabin shelf is 40 cm. What fits?
A 40 cm shelf takes the small serving tray at 31 x 21 cm with room to spare, or the rectangular valet tray at 32 x 17.5 cm. Shelf depth usually decides it before width does. If nothing in the range suits the space, a bespoke size can be cut to the measurement.
How do I clean a leather tray?
A soft dry cloth for daily use, and a barely damp cloth for anything that has been spilled, followed by natural drying away from heat. Avoid solvents and household cleaners on the leather; the Canadian Conservation Institute goes further and notes that leather dressings and saddle soap are no longer generally recommended. Details are on the care and maintenance page.
How long does delivery take?
Stock pieces ship from Türkiye within 1–2 business days and typically arrive within 4–15 business days, depending on the destination. Worldwide shipping is free.
Where to start
For most boats, three pieces cover the ground. The Medium Woven Leather Serving Tray at 45 x 32 cm is the one that stays in daily use. The Woven Leather Valet Tray, 18.5 cm handles the owner's cabin shelf. The Square Woven Leather Tray, Handleless, 36 cm gives the coffee table an edge. Order them in one of the seven shared colours and the rest of the boat can be filled in later without a mismatch. See the full tray collection.
Every piece is made by hand in Türkiye and delivered typically within 4–15 business days, with free worldwide shipping.
