Laying a table on board: placemats, coasters and more

A laid table on a yacht is seen from every side and used every day. Placemats give each setting a fixed place and protect the table beneath from heat and marks; coasters do the same for glasses on a side table or a bar.

Placemats come in two faux leather formats, round (36 cm) and rectangular (50 × 35 cm), both 1 cm thick so they lie flat. For deck lunches there are woven mats in faux leather cord, jute and bamboo, some edged with coral shapes or shells.

Coasters come as sets of four or six, round or square, and one set sits on its own steel stand. A napkin holder, single napkin rings and a lidded ashtray complete the table. Prices run from $80 to $210.

Round mats (36 cm) frame a plate and suit round tables and formal settings. Rectangular mats (50 × 35 cm) take a full place setting, with plate, cutlery and a glass, and follow the line of a long table.

How are the placemats cleaned?

Wipe faux leather mats with a soft, damp cloth and avoid chemical cleaners. Crocheted, jute and bamboo mats wipe clean with a damp cloth; bamboo should not be soaked.

How many coasters are in a set?

The round woven coasters come as a set of four. The square 13 cm coasters and the coasters with steel corner detail come as sets of six.
